VA Cemetery Tells Volunteers To Stop Telling Families “God Bless You” During Funerals…

(Chron) — Local veterans and volunteer groups are accusing Department of Veterans Affairs officials of censoring religious speech — including banning the word “God” — at Houston National Cemetery.

In one example cited in documents filed this week in federal court, cemetery director Arleen Ocasio reportedly told volunteers with the National Memorial Ladies that they had to stop telling the families, “God bless you,” at funerals and that they had to remove the words “God bless” from condolence cards.

The new allegations of “religious hostility” by VA and cemetery officials follow on the heels of a controversy over a prayer in Jesus’ name by Pastor Scott Rainey at a Memorial Day service in the cemetery.

The complaint accuses VA of “a widespread and consistent practice of discriminating against private religious speech” at the cemetery.

Ocasio is on vacation and could not be reached for comment. Her assistant, Amanda Rhodes, said the cemetery had no comment.

According to court documents, Ocasio banned members of the groups from using certain religious words such as “God” or “Jesus,” censored the content of prayer, and forbade the use of religious messages in burial rituals unless the deceased’s family submitted the text to her for prior approval.

Court documents also describe the closure of the cemetery’s chapel after Ocasio’s appointment as director two years ago.

Iran is hosting an "anti-terrorism" conference?

TEHRAN – High-ranking officials from 60 countries, including the main victims of terrorism, gathered in Tehran to attend the International Conference on Global Fight against Terrorism, which opened at the Summit Conference Hall yesterday and closes today.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Iraqi President Jalal Talebani Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, and Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir attended the first day of the conference.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad delivered a speech at the conference, in which he proposed that a secretariat should be established in an effort to coordinate counter-terrorism activities.

He said that the secretariat would make efforts to offer a single definition of terrorism, explore it roots, propose practical ways to campaign against terrorism, mobilize global support for counter-terrorism campaign, and reform colonialist and discriminatory mechanisms prevailing in the world so they incline toward justice.

In addition, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon sent a message to the conference, which was read out by UN representative Muhammad Rafiuddin Shah.

In his message, Ban thanked the Islamic Republic of Iran for organizing the conference and said that all countries in the world shoulder a responsibility for campaigning against terrorism.

He also expressed hope that the conference would achieve its objectives.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Iraqi President Jalal Talebani, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, and Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir delivered speeches at the conference.

In his speech, Karzai stated that Muslim countries have been the main victims of terrorism, and therefore should unite in their struggle against terrorism.

Now really, how demented can the thinking be in 60 nations? And Muslim countries have been the main victims of terrorism? Maybe it's because Islam is the main sponsor and endorser of terrorism.

Should that give you a clue Mr. Karzai? Oh wait ... I see ... it is really Zionist Israel's fault that Muslims are killing other Muslims in Muslim countries ... so get rid of Israel and ... presto-chango ... no more Muslims killing other Muslims!

Pain and adversity bring us to a closer walk with God as we come to see that meds only solve the problem short term. Could it be the average health care provider does not want us to get better, only better enough to come back for more of the temporary solution? When we learn to walk with Him in the trials, God provides the answer to our situations and our problems. Can we learn to share such pain for others even in our knowing their eternal destination is one of pain and suffering? Can we carry that burden to God, asking Him to bring relief to them even if it means using us to bring the solution to them? The writer of Psalms 126:5 reminds us:

”They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.”

Hey, this is the Chaplain again.

I've been thinking a lot about the idea of 'Shelter' lately. I guess that's because I've been dealing with lots of people who don't have adequate shelter.

Shelter is one of the three essential requirements for life, the other two being water and food. I know folks that live in some pretty fancy places. And this past week I bought a tent for a homeless man to live in. But listen, it's all temporary.

One of the things I have been reminded of in the last few weeks is that it doesn't matter what kind of shelter you live in; a storm can destroy it in just seconds. But there is one shelter that is permanent, eternal and will never be destroyed - no matter how hard the wind blows. Psalms 46:1 says,

"God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble." (GNT)

May I ask you, what are you counting on for shelter; shelter from the storms of life, and shelter that will see you through eternity? Jesus told us that He was the only way to know real security. Do you know Him? Would you like to have a peace that even a tornado can't blow away?

In speeches all over America, I have surprised many Christian people when I say, I would rather vote for an unbeliever who would preserve, protect, and defend the US Constitution, than vote for a believer who would NOT preserve, protect, and defend the US Constitution.

When a civil magistrate assumes public office, he or she does not swear an oath to be a “good Christian,” or to be a “good conservative,” or to read their Bible and pray everyday. What they do swear to, however, is to “preserve, protect, and defend” the US Constitution.....

"The best advice I got was not really advice but more of a warning. My son was born sleeping at 33 weeks. Many people knew we were pregnant so the best advice I got was from my grandmother who lost 2 babies, be prepared for people to ask how the baby is, they don't know that he was born sleeping and therefore their questions come with great big smiles and cheer. And be prepared for their reaction when you tell them he passed. There were so many people that didn't know, and even now 4 1/2 months later still people who don't know and ask who is watching the lil guy when we go out."

I admired the moms who were able to wade right in and take care of business without adding to the situation. I am glad with all my warts and other glitches God loves me and wanted me to be a part of His family. The writer of John 1:12 tells us,

Say, did you know that Mother's Day is the biggest Holliday in the year for phone calls? But Father's Day is the busiest day of the year for collect phone calls? I guess that's because we think dad can afford it.

Now, I don't know how rich your earthly father is or was; but if you're a Christian then you have a heavenly Father who owns it all. And not only that - He loves you immensely. For you to call your earthly father collect could cost him a few bucks. But the price your heavenly Father paid to have a relationship with you is incalculable. He loves you so much!

Now remember to call your dad for Father's Day if you can; and you can call him collect - he won't mind. And be sure to talk to your heavenly Father today - and every day. He's anxiously waiting for your call, and He's just a prayer away.

Maybe it's been a while since the two of you really talked. Today would be a great day to re-establish that relationship.

It is OK to grieve ...

Susan shares today the reality that it is OK to feel the many emotions of grief ... and to lean on family and friends for support.

That it is ok to grieve. It is ok to cry. It is ok to hurt. It is ok to be by myself. It is ok to ask for help. I was caregiver for nine months, knew everything medically happening to my daugther, or at least tried to stay on top of it. When... she died I felt lost, I didn't know what I was supposed to do. Luckily (if not for a better word) I have two cousins and a good friend who had lost children and knew what we were going through. And very supportive family and friends all around us. Nobody has made us feel like we are strange for still being sad, we do try to move on to make Chrissy proud though.

Larry Flynt, porn publisher and erstwhile snoop into the sex lives of politicians, has offered a job to disgraced former U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner. Flynt, founder of Hustler Magazine, made the job offer in a letter that was published in The Huffington Post on Thursday.

"This offer is not made in jest," wrote Flynt. "Just as we do not undertake insincere political crusades, we do not make insincere job offers."

Weiner could not be immediately reached for comment.

Flynt's job offer came within hours of the congressman's resignation on Thursday over a sexting scandal.

In the letter, Flynt offered to give Weiner a 20% raise above the salary he earned in the U.S. House of Representatives, ensuring the former congressman's medical benefits would match what he had received in office.

Flynt also offered to pay Weiner's moving expenses to Beverly Hills, California.

"While this employment opportunity is being offered in large part due to your qualifications and clear passion for making a change," Flynt wrote, "I feel that your unfortunate resignation is a prime example of unfounded political pressure and the hypocrisy that has invaded democracy in Washington, D.C." ...

A new analysis of wind energy supplied to the UK National Grid in recent years has shown that wind farms produce significantly less electricity than had been thought, and that they cause more problems for the Grid than had been believed.

The report (28-page PDF/944 KB) was commissioned by conservation charity the John Muir Trust and carried out by consulting engineer Stuart Young. It measured electricity actually metered as being delivered to the National Grid.

In general it tends to be assumed that a wind farm will generate an average of 30 per cent of its maximum capacity over time. However the new study shows that this is actually untrue, with the turbines measured by the Grid turning in performances which were significantly worse:

Or, in other words, there is little point building more wind turbines above a certain point: after that stage, not only will they miss out on revenue by often being at low output when demand is high, but they will also miss out by producing unsaleable surplus electricity at times of low demand. The economic case for wind – already unsupportable without the ROC scheme – will become even worse, and wind will require still more government support (it already often needs large amounts above and beyond ROCs).

So ... wind power produces less than expected ... and costs more to try and establish than thought ... fancy that.

But our governments want to push ahead with subsidizing more and more of a failed dream ... oh but it feels so good to dream.

The American Astronomical Society meeting in Austin has just made a major announcement on the state of the sun. Sunspots may be on the way out and an extended solar minimum may be on the horizon.

From Space.com reporting from the conference:

Some unusual solar readings, including fading sunspots and weakening magnetic activity near the poles, could be indications that our sun is preparing to be less active in the coming years.

The results of three separate studies seem to show that even as the current sunspot cycle swells toward the solar maximum, the sun could be heading into a more-dormant period, with activity during the next 11-year sunspot cycle greatly reduced or even eliminated.

The results of the new studies were announced today (June 14) at the annual meeting of the solar physics division of the American Astronomical Society, which is being held this week at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

Currently, the sun is in the midst of the period designated as Cycle 24 and is ramping up toward the cycle’s period of maximum activity. However, the recent findings indicate that the activity in the next 11-year solar cycle, Cycle 25, could be greatly reduced. In fact, some scientists are questioning whether this drop in activity could lead to a second Maunder Minimum, which was a 70-year period from 1645 to 1715 when the sun showed virtually no sunspots.

“We expected to see the start of the zonal flow for Cycle 25 by now, but we see no sign of it,” Hill said. “This indicates that the start of Cycle 25 may be delayed to 2021 or 2022, or may not happen at all.”

If the models prove accurate and the trends continue, the implications could be far-reaching.

“If we are right, this could be the last solar maximum we’ll see for a few decades,” Hill said. “That would affect everything from space exploration to Earth’s climate.”

We are already seeing the effect of our sleepy sun. Record snows over the northern hemisphere this past winter. Now there are record early snows taking place in the southern hemisphere as I type.

Growing seasons are already growing shorter ... and they will become shorter still ... the result will be dramatic food shortages ... with the possibility of millions starving, famine, and the subsequent human frantic drive for survival ... I'll leave that to your imaginations.

And ... behind it all ... is our Living God ... who is saying to arrogant 'man' that man cannot control climate ... for man is not God.

This is a very telling report from Science.com.

Perhaps the "greens" actually know this is coming ... and know that because of their lies that millions will die. Perhaps that is exactly what they want to happen.

REFUGIO, Texas (AP) — Investigators said a man has died while in the act of raping an elderly South Texas woman.

The Refugio County Sheriff's Office identified the man as 53-year-old Isabel Chavelo Gutierrez. Sheriff's Sgt. Gary Wright said the incident happened June 2 after he rode two miles by bicycle from his home to that of his 77-year-old victim in the tiny coastal community of Tivoli.

Wright said the 5'-7", 230-to-250 pound man sneaked into the woman's house and raped her at knifepoint.

During the assault, he said he wasn't feeling well, rolled over, and died.

Gutierrez' body was sent to the Nueces County medical examiner in Corpus Christi for autopsy.

Gutierrez was a registered sexual offender on parole from a sentence for aggravated sexual assault and indecency with a child.

Andrew Weaver, global warming alarmist, has decided that since he can't convince gray headed engineers that know real science, then one must turn to trying to convince youth with his propaganda.

Andrew Weaver apologizes for being late for the interview but explains he was giving a lecture to his daughter’s class at Lambrick Park secondary school in Victoria.

“It may be a provocative statement, but I’ll say it anyways: I’m fed up speaking with the stereotypical angry, retired, grey-haired engineer,” explained the University of Victoria professor and global warming guru.

“They’re stuck in their ways and think everything can be fixed and that this is not a big problem.”

Since 1989 Weaver has been studying climate issues and, more recently, trying to get governments to act decisively to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, largely from burning of fossil fuels. He’s now come to the conclusion that the federal government isn’t interested, and that it’s time to concentrate on Canada’s youth — the next generation of leaders.....

At least he is admitting that adults are hard to convince of the hype. That is good news, and really rather refreshing to hear from the former Noble Prize winner ... winning his prize with the global warming lie.

So .... you are turning to children? Don't you remember the disappointment in children when they learn that there really is no Santa Clause? This one's going to be even harder to defend Mr. Weaver ... at least Santa brought toys instead of robbing children for a lie.

Matt Stutzman has made the US Olympic Archery team ... and he has no arms ... and no offense intended ... but we are not talking about the Special Olympics event ... we're talking ... the World Olympics.

A little over a year ago, I wrote about Matt Stutzman, a young man in his late twenties, born with no arms. Matt never let his handicap slow him down, and could do most things as good or better than a person with arms. Matt does everything with his feet, and I mean everything — eat, drive a car, ride a motorcycle. You won’t find a handicap sticker on Matt’s car, nor is his car adapted for a person with no arms. He purposely challenges himself to do any and everything a “normal” person can do.

Matt was into archery in a big way, having placed high and winning several national competitions shooting against people without handicaps.

Are you sitting down? If not, you might want to, ‘cause here’s some really big news. Matt Stutzman has qualified for the National U.S. Olympic team in archery! Not the Special Olympics. The Olympic Team.

In qualifying for the team, he had the highest score for people shooting that day. Out of 30 people testing, three made the team, and Matt had the highest score. Not bad for a guy with no arms......

An amazing real story.

Hey, this is the Chaplain again.

Boy, there sure have been a lot of weather related disasters lately. Everybody is saying there have been more storms this spring than anytime they can remember. And the worst may still be coming. Tornados are still a strong possibility, record snows melting will mean more floods, and the hurricane season is just about to start.

Yesterday I was standing on a hill looking over a small town here in AR that was just about wiped off the map by a recent tornado. Someone asked me if I thought God was trying to get our attention. I told them that I was sure He was.

Now, I really don't know a lot about the weather and don't really understand what causes storms, but I do know God wants our attention. He said so many times in His Word, the Bible. And 2000 years ago God sent His one and only son, Jesus, to get our attention and to tell us that

'God is not willing that anyone should be lost or spend eternity in hell, but He wants everyone to know Him and have eternal life.'

And whether it's a tornado or just a personal crisis God will use whatever He can to draw us to Himself. Jesus said, 'I'm knocking on the door of your life, please let me in. I want to be your Savior and Lord.'

The American Dream of "Retirement" is quickly being "Retired" ... we are now being told to "embrace the rat race."

We all think it’s a panacea. If you don’t have enough money saved for retirement, you’ve got a few ways to close the gap between what you have and what you need in your nest egg: Save more, invest more aggressively, and/or work longer.

Well, it turns out that working longer is indeed an option, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute latest study. The only problem is that the latest research shows that you’ll have to work much longer than you anticipated. In fact, many Americans will have to keep on working well into their 70s and 80s to afford retirement, according to the study, titled “The Impact of Deferring Retirement Age on Retirement Income Adequacy.”

What’s more, it’s even worse for low-income workers, according Jack VanDerhei, one of the co-authors of the study. Those who earned (on average over the course of their careers) less than $11,700 per year, the lowest income quartile, would need to defer retirement till age 84 before 90% of those households would have just a 50% chance of affording retirement. ....

Friends ... that is adding nearly 20 years to one's working life before retirement ... and for the "little guys" it will never come according to the report.

Seriously ... is this the "hope and change" that Americans have been promised?

RICHMOND, Va. — The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond ran a rainbow flag up its flagpole last week and has been hearing about it ever since.

From conservative groups who are outraged. From gay rights groups who are pleased ... The bank unfurled the flag on June 1, at the request of a group of gay and lesbian employees in honor of gay pride month.

Jim Strader, a spokesman for the bank, said the bank had fielded hundreds of phone calls and as many e-mails about the flag. The flag, he said, symbolizes “values of being open and inclusive,” and shows that the bank is “a place that doesn’t discriminate.”

One of the most popular arguments by the flag’s opponents was that the bank is a government institution and so should not be displaying a flag that promotes a cause. And now that they are, the argument goes, they have an obligation to other causes.

Mr. Strader’s response is that the bank is in fact privately owned, as are all regional Federal Reserves, and that it considers requests by employees — this was the first one — but not the general public.....

OK ... so the Federal Reserve is not a government bank but rather a "privately owned" bank according to Mr. Strader. That will be news to most Americans ... but that is another story.

So ... Mr. Strader ... will you honor a potential request from Christian employees to fly the Christian Flag ... say ... during Easter ... or Christmas?

Or ... why not fly the Muslim Flag during Ramadan? Or why not fly the Mexican Flag during Cinco de Mayo?

Now ... Mr. Strader ... you said the bank does want to be "open minded and inclusive" ... Mr. Strader ... Mr. Strader ....

Sometimes our own "goodness" can be a downfall. We must come to the end of our "good enough" mentality to understand the truth of Romans 3:23:

“All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

From that foundation, it is easy to see the equality of the fact we are all in the same predicament without a Savior. That situation helps us to see the value of John 3:16:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
