“Life is a grindstone. Whether it grinds you down or polishes you up depends upon what you are made of.”  (Unknown)

In this life we will face situations that wear on us. It is not necessarily going to be something you do or did, but sometimes as a child of God you are going to face trials. The writer of 1Peter 4:12-14 gives us these words of encouragement,  “Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:  But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.“

God, Thank You for not only understanding oour struggles, but for being here with us. Amen

People can live one hundred years without really living a minute.

What a shame to exist without life. Without a relationship with Jesus, we are dead in our trespasses and sins (Ephesians 2:1). With Christ in our life, we have life and we have that life more abundantly (John 10:10).

God, thank You for life.  Amen.

“The louder he talked of his honor, the faster we counted our spoons.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson 1803–1882)

Most of the time if you have to wax eloquent in sharing all of your virtues there may be a flaw somewhere. The apostle Paul  in writing 1 Corinthians 8:1-3 told us this, “Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.  And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. But if any man love God, the same is known of him.”  We will truly be known by our deeds and not just by our words.

God, Let my actions edify You.  Amen.

Christianity must be practical. Two children were afraid they would be late for school. One said, “Let’s kneel down and pray to God that He may help us not to be late.” The other child offered a more practical solution: “No, let’s run and pray at the same time.”

Saint Augustine is credited with this quote, “Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you.”The apostle Paul challenges us with these words in 1st Corinthians 4:2, “It is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful."
God, help me as I do what I am able to do, especially to stay out of Your way. Amen

“God will make us broken bread and poured out wine to feed and nourish others” Oswald Chambers (1874–1917).

To be useful to God, we must allow Him to break us into usable portions and pour us into the lives of others. What a blessing when He chooses to use us not only for ourselves, but also to use us for even greater missions when we bless others.

As Jesus was headed to the cross, He was willing to be broken and poured out for our sakes. In Luke 22:42, He prayed, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”

God, thank You for the example of Your Son. Let us be willing also to serve others. Amen

“Make of our hearts a field to raise your praise” (Luci Shaw).

What a blessing to be able to cultivate a garden of praise to share with others. With these words, the writer of II Timothy 1:6 reminds us to cultivate the gifts of God within us: “Stir up the gift of God, which is in thee.”

Don’t forget to share the fruits with your friends and family.

God, let my praise to You not only be acceptable to You but also may the overflow bless others. Amen

“Every experience God gives us, every person he puts in our lives, is the perfect preparation for the future that only he can see” Corrie ten Boom (1892–1983).

Many life lessons we draw from today come not only from the schools that issued our diplomas, but also from every encounter whether we consider it accidental or chance, or if it comes from family or a lifelong friend. I can honestly say I use almost every day something from interaction with someone in my past.

When we realize the value of all our past experiences, it makes sense in Romans 8:28 when the apostle Paul told us: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

God, thank you for my past, present, and future friends who did, who are,  and who will teach me . Amen

"Character builds slowly, but it can be torn down with incredible swiftness” Faith Baldwin (1893–1978).

It seems that not a week goes by that we don’t hear the bad news of moral failures in one form of the other. The wind has been let out of the sails of many people when someone we trust slips. The writer of 1 Thessalonians 2:12 gives us this advice: “Walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory.”

God, wrap Your arms tightly around me lest I be the one to slip. Amen

“If you treat a person as he is, he will stay as he is; but if you treat him as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be” (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe).

In Hosea 11:1, God said, “When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt. “  God saw Israel not as servants in bondage in Egypt, but as His children, if you will, as King’s kids. He saw us in our bondage of sin and bought us with His own Son’s blood that we might be heirs, yea joint heirs with Jesus.

Since God has this confidence in us, let us walk in His victory.

God, thank You for Your confidence and investment in me. Amen

What say you?

This is the one question that has eternal significance.

“'But what about you?' he asked. 'Who do you say I am?' Simon Peter answered, 'You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.'” (Matthew 16:15-16)

What say you?

“The mission of Jesus Christ cannot be defined without speaking of man being lost.” (Henri Blocker)

The entire purpose of Jesus’ ministry can be summed up with His words in Matthew 18:11, “For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.” Praise God for sending His Son for me and you.

God, Thank you for sending Your Son Jesus, and for His obedience. Amen

“Never discourage anyone who continually makes progress, no matter how slow” (Plato).
Life is not a sprint, but a marathon. Each day is a lap in the race but a lap is not the entirety.  Listen to these words of Paul in Philippians 3:13, “Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before “ Let us encourage others and ourselves with these words of Paul.

God, let my words encourage others.  Amen

Two caterpillars were crawling across the grass when a butterfly flew over them. They looked up, and one nudged the other and said, “You couldn’t get me up in one of those things for a million dollars.”

When we look back at where change and progress has taken place in our Christian life, we see that our transformation many times is as dramatic as the caterpillar becoming the butterfly.

Let us ascribe to the apostle Paul’s words in Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

God, let me grow to reflect the brilliance You create in me. Amen
