Never the same

Losing a child to death brings a myriad of emotions ... all complicated ... all different ... all difficult.

Cathy speaks today about ... getting on?

"I have had several people tell me to "get on with life". We lost my 19 year old nephew in a horrible motorcycle accident. They never losing a young family member do not know what it is like. You do move on, you have to, but you are NEVER the same!! A piece of you is gone!!"
Cathy

Father, Yahweh, I pray today for Cathy, and all who have lost a child.  I pray that as they are forced to live day to day without the child they love ... that Your love will find it's way fresh and new into their hearts ... every morning.

Today's cherished Nugget from guest blogger Pastor Bill

A boy was walking with his father along a lonely road at night, carrying a lantern. He told his father he was afraid because the lantern showed such a little way ahead. The father answered, “That is so, but if you walk straight on, you will find that the light will reach to the end of the journey.” God often gives us light for only a little way ahead, but He always gives at least that, and so He always gives us light enough for the whole journey.

Though we can’t see where our journey through life is going to take us, we have to learn as did the disciples that we can trust Jesus because, as He told us in John14:6, He is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.  We can trust Him for the steps He gives us today and know they will lead us where we need to be next week, next month, and for eternity.

God, lead us in the paths You desire for us to travel.  Amen.

A college man walked into a photography studio with a framed picture of his girlfriend. He wanted the picture duplicated. This involved removing it from the frame. In doing this, the studio owner noticed the inscription on the back of the photograph: “My dearest Tom, I love you with all my heart. I love you more and more each day. I will love you forever and ever. I am yours for all eternity.” It was signed “Diane,” and it contained a P.S. stating, “If we ever break up, I want this picture back.”

As children of God, there is no P.S. We can never break up with Him.  We are reminded by the apostle Paul in Hebrews 13:5 of these words of God, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” What a beautiful promise from the one who doesn’t break promises.

God, thank You for being faithful to us and setting an example for us to follow.  Amen.

"If there is one characteristic more than others that contemporary public worship needs to recapture, it is this awe before the surpassingly great and gracious God."
(Henry Sloane Coffin)

One of our greatest challenges is to remember that even though we are the crowning achievement of God’s creation, we are still just creatures.  No matter how we try to color it and elevate our own stature, He alone is worthy of worship.  We can identify with Jacob who said these words to God in Genesis 32:10, “I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant.”

God, You alone are worthy of worship.  Amen.

"As John 4:23 says, 'It's time, as worshipers of God, to give him all we have. For when he is exalted, everything about me is decreased.' So many times we stand in the way of really stepping into the secret place of worship with God. Just abandon tradition and the 'expected' ways of Praise & Worship and get lost in the holy of holies with the sole intention of blessing the Fathers heart." (Jessica Leah Springer)

I think this is the place where the angels were in Isaiah 6:1-3, in which we read these words:  In the year that King Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.”

Just as a cool  rain refreshes the earth, the refreshing of the presence of the Holy Spirit washes over us causing us to want to rise up and cry, “Holy ,holy, holy!”

God, You are Holy and worthy to be worshiped and praised.  Amen.

Orville and Wilbur Wright were excited. On December 17, 1903, they had finally succeeded in keeping their homemade airplane in the air for 59 seconds. Immediately they rushed a telegram to their sister in Dayton, Ohio, telling of this great accomplishment. The telegram read, “First sustained flight today fifty-nine seconds. Hope to be home by Christmas.” Upon receiving the news, the sister was so excited about the success that she rushed to the newspaper office and gave the telegram to the editor. The next morning the newspaper headline read, “Popular Local Bicycle Merchants To Be Home For Holidays.” One of the greatest stories of the twentieth century was missed because an editor missed the point.

When reading God’s word, The Holy Bible, it must be read in the light of the Holy Spirit. The truths hidden in the pages of the Bible must be spiritually discerned, not grasped by intellect only.  The apostle Paul puts it this way in 1 Corinthians 2:14,  “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

God, thank You for Your Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.  Amen.

Genuine concern

Losing a child to death brings a myriad of emotions ... all complicated ... all different ... all difficult.

Sandy speaks today about ... concern

"Its as if another child will fix every thing. I did have another baby and he has healed my heart so much but I still wonder what my first would have been like at all of the stages of growing. Some people don't know what to say. All they need to do is acknowledge our loss and be sincere."
Sandy

Father, Yahweh, I pray today for Sandy, and all who have lost a child.  I pray that Your grace and Your concern will fill their hearts And let those that try to console them find the right words that express their genuine concern.

The Word of God corrects us. That is a particularly interesting word. When flying to Florida, it seemed to me like a pretty straight shot from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale; however,  in the cockpit of the airplane is a fine-tuned radar mechanism. All during the trip, the plane is flown on automatic pilot, which continually, yet imperceptibly, corrects the course of the plane to keep it on track. That’s what God’s Word does for us. It nudges us to keep us on course. It keeps affecting the way we think, the way we draw conclusions, and the way we make our daily life decisions.

I find it awesome that God’s instructions for us are as up to date as the daily news. To encourage us, the apostle Paul gives us these words in 2 Timothy 2:16,  “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”

God, help us to take advantage of the words You have left for us.  Amen.

“God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there, there is no such thing.” (C.S. Lewis )

As we accept God, we begin to grow in the understanding of His love for us. When that time comes, we are able to reach beyond ourselves in sharing the love He builds within us. The writer if 1st John 4:7-8 encourages us with these words: Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

God, thank You for the love, joy and peace that allows us to share Your love with others.  Amen.

About 100 years ago, there was a candlestick maker who often stopped at a market and bought a fish for his evening meal. The fish was wrapped in ordinary paper, which not only became soggy but also the passengers on the street car always complained about the odor. One morning he dipped the paper in molten wax and  wrapped his fish in the treated paper. As a result, the paper did not become soggy, and there was no odor. That is how waxed paper was born.

Too many times an opportunity looks and smells so much like a problem most of us will miss it. On the other hand, someone else rolls up his or her sleeves and makes a difference that affects us all. In James 1:5, we are given this advice: “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.”

God, give us wisdom to know what we can or even need to change and wisdom to know what we need to learn to accept.  Amen.

It was not God

Myra speaks today about ... more bad advice

That it was not GOD who took my son & HE has got nothing to do with my boy's passing :(
Myra

Father, Yahweh, I pray today for Myra, and all who have lost a child.  I pray that Your grace will fill their hearts when the advice given is not what is really needed to be heard.  I pray that they will each one hear Your voice through it all.

“Never think that Jesus commanded a trifle, nor dare to trifle with anything he has commanded.” (Dwight Lyman Moody 1837–1899)

The commands of Jesus are not grievous, but are for our profit.  Pity the one who rejects or neglects the commands of God.  The writer of 1John 2:3-4 says the following: “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

God, help us to love You enough to keep Your commandments.  Amen.

Questions

Losing a child to death brings a myriad of emotions ... all complicated ... all different ... all difficult.

Brenda speaks today about ... missed condolences

I was not given any worst advice but when there are in-laws who do not offer not even a condolence it questions how much they care about you to begin with !!!
Brenda

Father, Yahweh, I pray today for Brenda, and all who have lost a child.  I pray that Your grace will fill their hearts ... even when others miss the opportunity to reach out and lend an emotional hand ... esp. when it is relatives the don't reach out.

A group of atheists were criticizing the Bible. One of them spoke about creation, saying, “What man with any common sense could believe that several thousand years ago God stooped down and picked up a piece of mud, breathed on it, and changed it into a human being?” A Christian man standing by overheard the conversation and responded with “I cannot answer all the questions about creation, but this I know. One night God stooped down, picked up the dirtiest piece of mud in this city, breathed upon it by His Holy Spirit, and changed a gambling, thieving, drinking wretch into a peace-loving man of God. I was that man.”

We are saved not by who or what we are, but by Whose we are and what we become through Him. The apostle Paul in Ephesians 2:8-9  reminds us: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

God, Thank You for loving us as we were and are.  Amen.

Colorado Coward

If one more person calls that low life coward, that shot some 70 people at the Bat Man movie .... intelligent .... I'm going to puke.  He is not intelligent ... he is a psycho coward.

Take for example Audie Murphy during WW2.  Murphy was credited with destroying six tanks in addition to killing over 240 German soldiers and wounding and capturing many others, as reported in Wikipedia.  Oh, and that was accomplished while the same Germans and their tanks were actively trying to kill him.  The German soldiers were not sitting, unarmed in a movie theater.  Audie Murphy was smart .... the Colorado killer is not smart, but rather a sick coward.

“The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.” (Samuel Johnson)

The strand of the web of a spider by itself seems insignificant. However it has the strength ten times greater than steel of the same weight.  All of the tentacles of our habits reach out to encompass us about, holding us captive.  The apostle Paul gives this warning to the 1st century Christians that is good advice for us also in Colossians 2:8, “Be careful that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit based on human tradition, based on the elemental forces of the world, and not based on Christ.”

God, Thank You for letting us draw near to You to be able to break free from the traps of the world. Amen.

Two goats met one another upon a narrow plank set up across a river, so that they could not pass by without one thrusting the other off. If they were human beings, they would argue who had the right to survive. On the other hand, the goats figured out how one could help the other and, at the same time, help itself. One lay down and let the other leap over it.

With our super intelligence,  we humans let pride get in the way. For example, we find ourselves desiring to be Number One rather than reaching out to others.  With these words in Mark 9:34, Jesus reminded His disciples (and us) how we should act: If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

God, let us learn the joys of serving others.  Amen.
