Friday, August 30th, 2013.  Today's cherished Nugget from guest blogger Pastor Bill.

“All men desire peace, but very few desire those things that make for peace”  (Thomas à Kempis).

The writer of Proverbs 15:1 gives us this good advice: “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

How many arguments could have been avoided this week had we only been willing not to have the last word? How much peace could have been purchased with these three words, “I was wrong”?

God, help me not only to desire peace but also to do what is necessary to walk in peace with You, with my family, and with my friends. Amen.

Did you hear about the boy who failed all his college work? He wired his mother: “Failed everything; Prepare Papa.” His mother wired back, “Papa prepared; Prepare yourself.”

In view of the coming judgment, this is the message a lot of us need. God is prepared. We need to prepare ourselves!

Jesus said in Matthew 25:13, “Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.” Are you prepared? If you do not even understand the question drop me a note with your phone number and Let’s Talk!

God, thank You for giving us time to get ready.  Help us to share with others the answer. Amen.

“Everyone wants to ride with you in the limo, but what you need is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down” (Oprah Winfrey).

You can bet the prodigal son found the truth of that statement when his funds ran out. While the money lasted, he had friends to excess, but no one to stake him to a meal when he was broke (Luke 15:11-16). Finally, he remembered that he could find food in his father’s house, and as he returned, he found--in addition to food--acceptance and love.

God, help us not to leave to find out what we will miss, but help us to cling to the love and fellowship You have for us. Amen.

“It is not our comment on the Word that saves, but the Word itself” (Robert Murray M’Cheyne).

This is another reminder that the message is infinitely more important than the messenger. In I Corinthians 1:25-31, the apostle Paul put this into perspective: “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.”

God, thank You that You even want to use a lump of clay like me. Hide me behind the cross that I might not mess up Your Word. Amen.

Spurgeon tells a tale of a young man who made an open profession of the Gospel. His father, greatly offended, gave him this advice: “James, you should first get yourself established in a good trade, and then think of the matter of religion.”

“Father,” said the son, “Jesus Christ advises me differently; He says, ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of God’ ” (Matt. 6:33).

We live in a time in history where so much is backward, yea contrary to the Word of God. We must recognize the problem for what it is and change our direction, and some must even change their eternal destinations.

God, let me walk with You, seeking You and Your kingdom and letting the rest of the things fall in place. Amen

“Alas for those who never sing, but die with all their music in them” (Oliver Wendell Holmes).
If we never sing, we may be cheating ourselves or someone else out of a blessing. Because of our struggles, we can ask ourselves what song have we stifled that may have opened someone’s heart.  How sad it is if no one were to care to sing unto the Lord.

The writer of Psalms 13:6 gives this word to us: “ I will sing unto the Lord for He has dealt bountifully with me.”

God, I give praise to You and may it be a sweet savor rising up to You even if no one else hears. Amen.

C. S. Johnson shares this family lesson: “My son, Michael, was four years old the night I found him sobbing uncontrollably in the hallway. Concerned, I knelt next to him and drew him close.“'What’s the matter, sweetheart? Are you hurt?’ He shook his head and turned to me, but I was unprepared for his response. “ ‘Daddy said a bad word to me!’ he sobbed. I almost laughed out loud. I had known my husband 12 years and had rarely heard him raise his voice. But Michael had heard him say something, and I was curious enough to want to know what it was. “ ‘Honey, what bad word did Daddy say?’ And seeing a chance for sympathy, my sensitive four-year-old stopped crying and blurted out—‘Obey!’ “I never think of that incident now without asking my Heavenly Father to keep me from believing, as my son did, that ‘obey’ is a bad word.”
God, may my walk with You be in obedience, not just carrying out the letter of the law, but following the spirit of Your intent. Amen.

A person with six children is better satisfied than a person with $6 million. Reason: The man with $6 million wants more.

Psalm 127:3-5 tells us, “Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.”

Children are a special blessing, for whether we have one or many, they bring us much satisfaction. Money or riches only makes many folks want for more.

God, thank You for my children and grandchildren and my great grandchild. They have been, are, and will always be a blessing to me. Amen.

“There is nothing small in the service of God” (Saint Francis of Sales 1567–1622).

It is not the magnificence of what we have or give, as much as it is our willingness to give what we have. Remember what God asked Moses in Exodus 4:2, “What is in your hand?” He knows what we have, and He looks at our heart to see our intent.

God, make my hand and heart willing to open to You. Amen.

"The man who has no inner life is the slave of his surroundings"
(Henri Frederic Amiel).

As children of God, we are not dependent on our surroundings, but we are victorious because of Who lives within us. Galatians 2:20 tells us, "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

May our walk reflect the relationship with our Heavenly Father and keep us from conforming to the world.

God, thank You for dwelling with and in us. Let our wills be found in You. Amen

It is said a bulbous root was found in the hand of one of the mummies discovered in a pyramid. That root, after having been buried for many hundreds of years, when placed in the earth, grew and bloomed a beautiful, but unknown flower.

We plant seeds every day, wanting to see the final product. It is always exciting to see something grow and flourish that we have given up on. For example, when I moved to my home in Conway, an old house, I found flowers blooming throughout the yard. One day, as I was mowing, I noticed I had scraped some roots. I thought to myself, “Well, I won't have to worry about mowing around those from now on.” In due time, however, those flowers sprang up and produced beautiful blossoms.

What we plant comes up later than we plant and in its own season bears fruit. We are told to “Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days” (Eccl. 11:1); thus we must beware of the type of seeds we are sowing.

God, help us to plant seeds of kindness, love, and compassion,  and to be aware that what we sow we shall reap. Amen.

advice

Losing a child to death brings a myriad of emotions ...

all complicated ... all different ... all difficult.

Silent Grief speaks today about ... advice ...

Other people love to give advice to those grieving the loss of a child. They tell us how long to grieve, they tell us how to grieve, they tell us when to get moving again, they tell us how to build a new life, etc. The problem with all of this is, there is no magic formula of "one size fits all" when it comes to child loss. Everybody grieves the loss of his/her child in their own personal way. And, there is no right or wrong way to grieve.

Others need to respect that fact and know that we're doing the very best we can under circumstances that are the most difficult anyone will endure. To be a friend to someone who is grieving the loss of a child simply means "being there and offering a listening ear."

God bless all who do just that -- stand by our sides and listen!

Father, Yahweh, I pray today for Silent Grief, and all who have lost a child. or a grandchild.  I pray that You will hold them as close to Your heart as You hold the child they love and lost.

Father, bless them today.

Matthew Henry, the famous Bible scholar, was once accosted by thieves and wrote these words in his diary: “Let me be thankful first because I was never robbed before; second, although they took my purse, they did not take my life; third, because, although they took my all, it was not much; and fourth, because it was I who was robbed, and not someone else.”

Apparently the scholar had learned the lesson of keeping things in perspective. The writer of Psalms 136, from verse 1 through verse 26 (the last), reminds us of the means of keeping our own lives in perspective: “Give thanks unto the Lord for He is good and His mercy endureth forever.”

God, thank You for Your love and protection in ways we don’t even know.  Amen.

Some years ago, after a vigorous brotherly and sisterly disagreement, our three children retired only to be aroused at two o’clock in the morning by a terrific thunderstorm. Hearing an unusual noise upstairs, I called in to find out what was going on. A little voice answered, “We are all in the closet forgiving each other” (Robert C. Tuttle).

These two were learning at an early age the benefits of forgiving and moving on. When we love someone, we can forgive him or her easily. The writer of Proverbs 17:17 reminds us: “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”

God, thank you for loving me and forgiving me. Amen

“Man thinks he loses something—time— when he does not do things quickly. Yet he does not know what to do with the time he gains—except kill it” (Erich Fromm 1900–1980).

Many things steal our time.  In fact, a world of challenges try to keep us from the more or most important activity. How and where we spend our time indicates the value we place on that activity. The writer of Ecclesiastes 3:17 says,  “I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.”

Thank You for the right to remain silent. Help us to chose that option at appropriate times. Amen.

shattered ... weary ... confused ....

Losing a child to death brings a myriad of emotions ...

all complicated ... all different ... all difficult.

Silent Grief speaks today about ... confusion ...

When a child dies part of us dies, too. Children are "life", and they are our future as well as our present. When we lose a child so many of our hopes and dreams die and we are left wondering how to pick up the broken pieces and rebuild some kind of life that has meaning. It's not easy -- not one little bit of it! It can take years to gather up enough strength to look to the future with new hopes and dreams. And, sometimes, that never happens.

That's just what losing a child does to a person's heart -- we are left shattered and weary and confused.

May today be a more calm day in the journey of child loss for all who are traveling this harsh, unknown path!

Father, Yahweh, I pray today for Silent Grief, and all who have lost a child. or a grandchild.  I pray that You will hold them as close to Your heart as You hold the child they love and lost.

When two dark angry clouds encounter each other, the response is great and brilliant flashes of lightening. The writer of Proverbs 15:1 puts it this way: “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.”

If only we temper our words, think of the silver linings we will find behind each cloud.

“Man prefers to believe what he prefers to be true” (Francis Bacon, 1561–1626).

The trouble with the statement above, whether you choose to believe it or not, is that it does matter what is true. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the Life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). Choosing to prefer...to believe...the truth not only makes all the difference in this world but also in the world to come.

God, thank You for sending the truth to us in the flesh. Amen
