Daily Nugget

Friday, May 31st, 2013.  Today's cherished Nugget from guest blogger Pastor Bill.

As storms pass through our state and the states that neighbor us, not only am I reminded to pray for my family and friends, but also to remember The One Who is able to deliver us from the storms or to carry us through to wherever He bring us.

When my girls were little, I remember that during the storms they would quote Psalms 56:3: “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” This Scripture helped calm their fears and increase their trust in God.

Thank You for Your protection and Your comfort in the storms. Amen.

“God’s in his heaven All’s right with the world” (Robert Browning 1812–1889)!

We may not agree with all that is going on in our world or even in our country, state, or family, but we can know that God is still in control. Let us let God be God and turn to the words of the writer of Lamentations 3:40-41: “Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD. Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.”

God, You are faithful and true. I put my trust in You. Amen.

"Devotion is not a thing that passes, that comes and goes, as it were, but it is something habitual, fixed, permanent that extends over every instant of life and regulates all our conduct" (Douglas V. Steere, 1901– 1995).

To be devoted is a trait that must find its way back into our culture. Our society has been blown by every fad that comes along, and our politicians bend with every poll that comes down the pipe. We must rise up and be individuals who can be counted on to do what is right in the eyes of the Lord. Let us strive to live by these words found in James 5:12: “Let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.”

God, let our devotion to You grow deeper each day, lest we drift from Your presence. Amen.

“From housework to heights of prayer . . . hurry and impatience are sure marks of the amateur” (Evelyn Underhill 1875–1941).

Many people want to hurry and seek God through prayer, or else they wait until they are so worn out they can’t even stay awake. Do we need Jesus to say the same thing to us that He said to the disciples in Matthew 26:40, “What, could ye not watch with me one hour?”

God, help us to remember in all things to take time to talk to You and spend time letting You speak to us.  Amen.

“The greatest glory of a free-born people is to transmit that freedom to their children” (William Havard).

Most of us desire to give good things to our children, especially things that will be able to be a blessing to them. I want to thank those families that have lost a member in the service to our country, in protecting our freedom.  In Psalms 33:11-12 we get these great words, “The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.  Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.”

God, thank You for our freedoms. Help us to elect leaders dedicated to keeping our freedoms and to bringing our country back to “One Nation under God!” Amen.

“Every evening I turn my worries over to God. He is going to be up all night anyway” (Mary C. Crowley).

Who am I to think that by spending all night tossing and turning I can solve my concerns, much less all the world’s ills. I agree with Mary in releasing my worries to God, for He is big enough to shoulder my bag of trials along with everything else He is handling.

The writer of 1Peter 5:7 reminds us to “Cast all your care upon Him, because He cares about you.”

God, thank You for Your care over us. Amen.

“Life would be more pleasant if we could forget our troubles as easily as we forget our blessings” (Tom Haggai).

When things are going good, we must be careful not to forget where our blessings have come from. In Deuteronomy 6:12, we read, “Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.”

God, thank You. You are my all-in-all. Amen.

Conflicting emotions

Losing a child to death brings a myriad of emotions ...

all complicated ... all different ... all difficult.

Silent Grief speaks today about ... holidays ...

There is always so much advertising and talk about "holiday weekends" -- family picnics, family camping trips, family swimming outings. Family. Family. Family. Which is wonderful -- except when you have a child missing from the family. Just hearing the words "family time" to those who have gone through child loss can bring on tears, panic attacks, anxiety attacks, bad dreams, and mood swings. When there is a child missing from the family, our heart aches to the point of breaking because we miss our child so much! Nothing feels "right or complete" any more. The circle feels broken. There is always that little voice that reminds us, "Your child is gone" and the pain is indescribable. It's so hard to smile and act like everything is okay when inside we feel like we're ready to collapse. There are no words to explain what it feels like to miss your child so much you feel like you're going to explode from holding in the pain! We love our family here on earth so much, but we miss our child so much we want to die so we can be together. It's not easy to live with those two very strong conflicting emotions of love!!!!!

Father, Yahweh, I pray today for Silent Grief, and all who have lost a child. or a grandchild.  I pray that You will hold them as close to Your heart as You hold the child they love and lost.

Father, bless them today.

Lawrence Peters has noted that you can always tell a real friend by the fact that when you’ve made a fool of yourself, he doesn’t feel you’ve done a permanent job.

There are few folks with whom you can truly be yourself, knowing they know more about you than you want to admit and still love you and want to be your friend. I am blessed to have a blood brother who is also a true friend. I also have a couple of friends who share that close relationship with me without the benefit of kinship. Together we encourage and strengthen each other.

The writer of Proverbs 27:17 shares this: “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

God, thank You for my family and friends. Help me to be that friend who strengthens others. Amen.

Every year in February, I chop and cut my Crepe Myrtle back to a crag of a tree. More than once my wife has accused me of killing the poor bush; however, each year the tree continues not only to survive but also to thrive.

When the world and the devil thought it had put to death one man known as Jesus Christ, this news came from and unlikely place (the graveyard): “He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay” (Matthew 28:6).

God, thank You for picture daily that remind us that Jesus rose again. Amen.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to our friends in Oklahoma and friends out there we have yet to meet. We grieve with the families who have suffered loss both of lives and of property. We rejoice in each success story, whether of child or adult found safe and sound.

In Romans 12:15 the apostle Paul tells us to “Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.”

God, our hearts are heavy for the folks in Oklahoma who lost property and friends and family. We praise You for those who have been spared. Amen.

Give God all glory and praise!

Oklahoma

Losing a child to death brings a myriad of emotions ...

all complicated ... all different ... all difficult.

Silent Grief speaks today about ... the tornado in Oklahoma ...

This tragedy in Oklahoma has touched many, many of us personally including myself. I lived there for three years and know many people who have been affected by the tornado. For those of us who have lost a child, we know first-hand the fear and panic and horror of hearing those words, "I'm so sorry." Those words make our insides shake and bring emotions to the forefront that have been tucked away for a while because they're too hard to hear again. May God bless ALL who are in OK who have so much pain ahead of them. Life is so fleeting -- it can be snuffed out in a mere second. God bless you, my Silent Grief family of friends, in a most special way today. Together, may we continue in prayer for those who have lost precious children in OK, as well as continue to love and support one another through this day. Sometimes the pain of child loss feels like more than we can bear.

Father, Yahweh, I pray today for Silent Grief, and all who have lost a child. or a grandchild.  I pray that You will hold them as close to Your heart as You hold the child they love and lost.

Father, bless them today.

“Praise is the honey of life which a devout heart extracts from every bloom of providence and grace”  (Charles H. Spurgeon).

If we look, we can find a reason to praise God. He is worthy of praise and each blessing brings our appreciation of Him to a higher level. The writer of Psalm 21:13 says, “Be thou exalted, LORD, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power.”

God, thank You for each blessing we received today, and the ones we will find throughout the day. Amen.

Give God all glory and praise!

The U.S. Senate pays $116,000, and the U.S. House of Representatives pays $123,000 annually to their respective chaplains, whose chief official duty is to open legislative sessions with prayer. We think there are thousands of teachers, and students, too, who would love to open class sessions with prayer without any pay for it at all. You figure it out  (Pulpit Helps, March 1996).

It is a good thing for us to pay for prayer through our taxes at the Senate and House of Representatives level. Maybe it will lead to returning sanctioned prayer to our classrooms; however, paid or volunteer many teachers, administrators, principals, and even lunch room workers are praying for our classrooms.

The apostle Paul, in Ephesians 6:18, gives us this encouragement to pray: “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”

God, thank You for teaching us to pray and for allowing us to come directly to Your throne of grace. Amen.

Give God all glory and praise!

“The greatest excuse given to me by people in every country for not becoming Christians is the division among Christians today” Billy Graham (1918– ).

The writer of Psalms 133:1 encourages us with these words: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”

May we strive to do our part, not by compromising truth, but by finding common ground in Jesus, the way, the truth, and the life.

God, let me be willing to show others a spirit of cooperation by walking closer to You.  Amen.

Friday, May 16th, 2013.  Today's cherished Nugget from guest blogger Pastor Bill.

An evangelist had held a service, at the close of which a little girl presented a bouquet of flowers the first spring had brought forth. He asked, “Why do you give me these flowers?”

She answered, “Because I love you.”

“Do you bring the Lord Jesus such gifts of your love at times?” he inquired.

“Oh,” said the little one, with an angelic smile, “I give myself to him!”

This attitude must be our example not only in our gifts but also in our service to God.  Our gifts must be motivated by a heart of love as we are reminded by the apostle Paul in I Corinthians 13:3, “And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profits me nothing.”

God, Let my life and service be an acceptable offering to You. Amen
