Yahweh, Day 19

Day 19 Yahweh... The Redeemer

The great and glorious reality of the Biblical "Redeemer" is essential to an understanding of Yahweh.

Exodus 6:6 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
“Therefore tell the Israelites: I am Yahweh, and I will deliver you from the forced labor of the Egyptians and free you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and great acts of judgment.”

We find the first introduction of the "redeemer" in Genesis as Jacob gives a brief yet concise commentary on his life. One interesting facet of this commentary is that Jacob refers to the working of Yahweh in his life to that of an angel because that was the only way for Jacob to describe what he had seen of Yahweh's presence and activity.

Gen 48:13-16 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
13 Then Joseph took them both—with his right hand Ephraim toward Israel’s left, and with his left hand Manasseh toward Israel’s right—and brought them to Israel.
14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and put it on the head of Ephraim, the younger, and crossing his hands, put his left on Manasseh’s head, although Manasseh was the firstborn.
15 Then he blessed Joseph and said: “The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,
16 the Angel who has redeemed me from all harm — may He bless these boys.”

First notice the deliberate association of three references to God, with the "angel" being the last of the references.

"God before whom my fathers" vs. 15
"God who has been my shepherd" vs. 15
The Angel who has redeemed me" vs. 16

The Angel who has redeemed me ... would be nothing other than the Son of Yahweh, Jesus ... Redeemer ... the physical representative of Yahweh ... sent to redeem.

The Basis for understanding "redeeming" is in the idea of buying back something that was already yours, but then was lost.  We were Yahweh's. Yahweh moves to redeem that which was His.

Intercessory Prayer: Oh Father!  You have moved to reclaim that which was and is rightfully Yours.  We praise You for Your wisdom and commitment to fulfilling Your plans, will, and intentions for Your creation.  We thank You for sharing the same with us through Your word and Your actions.  Help us to learn that this is for Your sake that You have moved to redeem us.  In Jesus Name.
