Day 284
Yahweh: Swearing by Himself

 
Amos 6:8 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
“The Lord GOD has sworn by Himself — the declaration of Yahweh , the God of Hosts:
I loathe Jacob's pride and hate his citadels, so I will hand over the city and everything in it.”

It would be difficult to convey the opening power of God declaring His Name and descriptive titles in this declaration!  But, let‘s try!

* “Lord” is “Adonai” which is referring to a Master, owner, Lord, Sovereign.
* “GOD” is actually here God’s Name, “Yahweh” that we have been studying daily.  The Eternal, Self Existent One.
* Then “Yahweh” again, repeated again for emphasis.
* The word translated “himself” is actually the Hebrew word “Nephesh” which is often translated “soul” or “Spirit.”  It originates from the idea of “breath.”
* “God” is the majestic “Elohim” which is used of the creator God In Genesis and includes the aspect of being the Judge proper of the universe.
* The Hebrew word “Hosts” is “tzevaot” and is a reference to God being the Commander of the entire host or assembly of Heaven’s armies.

Therefore, bear with me as I try to convey just a touch of the power of the opening of this declaration.

“This is from the Master, Sovereign, Ruler … Yahweh The Eternal Self Existent One … and I swear by My very Soul that I … Yahweh, The Eternal Self Existent One … being the Creator and Judge of the entire universe and the Commander of all of Heaven’s Armies …  I LOATHE Jacob’s pride and I hate his Citadels!”
