Yahweh: Creator/Sustainer

Amos 5:8-9 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
“The One who made the Pleiades and Orion,
who turns darkness into dawn
and darkens day into night,
who summons the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the earth —
Yahweh is His name.
He brings destruction on the strong,
and it falls on the stronghold.”

It is very easy for we Christians to fall into the snare of our “religion” rather than living in the present awe of God.

Amos here need remind us that God not only created the universe, we don’t really have a problem with that, but God also is solely responsible for the moment by moment sustaining of the universe and every part of His creation.  All the “laws” of physics and science were designed by God.  Some of them have been discovered by mankind, and described by mankind, but they were all created, instituted, and maintained by Yahweh.

Remove the sustaining hand of God’s presence and reign and the result would be absolute chaos, unimaginable chaos.  This is the devastating reality of the “lake of fire” spoken of  in Revelation 20:14-15: “Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.  And anyone not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.” (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
