Yahweh, Day 283

Day 283
Yahweh: Carrying

Amos 5:26-27 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)
“’But you have taken up Sakkuth your king and Kaiwan your star god, images you have made for yourselves. 27 So I will send you into exile beyond Damascus.’ Yahweh , the God of Hosts, is His name. He has spoken.”

There is an irony here in the words of Yahweh.  First God charges Israel with having “taken up” their idol.  This is a literal reference to the people having to “pick” up the idol and carry it where ever they were going.  Then Yahweh states that He is going to “send” the people into exile.  This verb for “send” in many ways represents the same idea of being picked up.

God, for one thing, is saying something like, “You have made and picked up and carried your idols around with you, so, I am going to pick you up and carry you away to a place where you really don’t want to go.”  (very loose paraphrase, but focusing on the play on words around the idea of something being picked up)

For today’s application we would see Christ using the same construction of irony in Matthew 7:2, “For with the judgment you use, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (HCSB)  Applied like this, “You want to pass judgment on someone you are not worthy to judge, go ahead, for with the same attitude that you exhibit toward another, you are guaranteed to receive the same from others.”

This, is in The Name.
