Yahweh: ... The God of Hosts ...

"Yahweh is the God of Hosts; Yahweh is His name."
Hosea 12:5 (Holman Christian Standard Bible)

Israel was constantly tempted to join hands with other nations for protection ... to worship other gods for the same ... and Yahweh has a consistent message for His people ... of all the things/gods they might look to for help and protection ... He, Yahweh, is the God above all gods/helps/securities.  

Thus the meaning of the title God of Hosts.  To whoever/whatever Israel might look to other than Yahweh, Yahweh is over them all.
