Day 13: When God Becomes Yahweh

It would be easy to miss part of the drama between verse 8 and verse 14 in Genesis 22.  In verse 8, Abraham tells Isaac that “God” will provide for the burnt offering, “God” being the generic Hebrew title “Elohiym”   By verse 14, there is a stunning and life changing transformation …

In verse 8, Abraham is obeying “God” in gut raw faith … then … after the actual provision of the ram … as Abraham has the dagger raised … then … faith has been vindicated by God keeping His promise … and God is no longer just “God”… but “God” has become personal to Abraham, God is now “Yahweh” to Abraham in verse 14.

This is the Psalmist’s opening in the 23rd Psalm, “The LORD (Yahweh) is MY Shepherd, there is nothing I lack!”  Yahweh longs to be more than just “God” in your life.

Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”
…. And Abraham named that place The LORD Will Provide, “Yahweh-yireh”so today it is said: “It will be provided on the LORD’s mountain.”

Intercessory Prayer: Oh Father!  Help us to know You!  Not just what we’ve read, heard, studied about You … but help us to see You alive and actively at work in our lives and in our world.  And this we ask so that we can shout to the world that You alone are God, and that You are the God who cares and loves, and gives, and helps … You are Yahweh!
