When God Becomes Yahweh

It would be easy to miss part of the drama between verse 8 and verse 14 in Genesis 22. In verse 8, Abraham tells Isaac that “God” will provide for the burnt offering, “God” being the generic Hebrew title “Elohiym” By verse 14, there is a stunning and life changing transformation…

In verse 8, Abraham is obeying “God” in gut raw faith… then… after the actual provision of the ram… as Abraham has the dagger raised… then… faith has been vindicated by God keeping His promise… and God is no longer just “God”… but is now “Yahweh” to Abraham in verse 14.

This is the Psalmist opening in the 23rd Psalm, “The LORD (Yahweh) is MY Shepherd, there is nothing I lack!”

Yahweh longs to be more than just God in your life.

Genesis 22:7-8
Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”

Genesis 22:14
And Abraham named that place The LORD Will Provide, “Yahweh-yireh” so today it is said: “It will be provided on the LORD’s mountain.”
