Daily Nugget

Friday, July 29th, 2011.

Today's cherished Nugget from guest blogger Pastor Bill.

The life story of Willie Mays is shown on television from time to time. He is one of the greatest athletes baseball has ever produced, but he wasn’t always like that. He idolized Joe DiMaggio. He watched how DiMaggio stood, how he walked, how he swung the bat, how he ran; he tried his best to be another DiMaggio. Finally, some wise coach said to him, “Willie, you have great ability. Don’t be like anybody else. Be yourself.” As a result, he became Willie Mays. If you were to name the greatest baseball players in the history of baseball, no list would be complete without the name of this man who became himself.

It is difficult to try to be someone else, or to try to act like someone else wants us to. On the other hand, for us to become what God wants us to be, we just have to be ourselves. He each one of us uniquely and with a special purpose. The writer of Jeremiah 1:5 records these words of God:
“Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.”
"God, thank You for letting me be me and loving me anyway.
Amen."
