Historic bailout bill passes Congress; Bush signs

By JULIE HIRSCHFELD DAVIS, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - With the economy on the brink of meltdown and elections looming, a reluctant Congress abruptly reversed course and approved a historic $700 billion government bailout of the battered financial industry on Friday. President Bush

The 263-171 House vote capped two weeks of tumult in Congress and on Wall Street, punctuated by urgent warnings from Bush that the country confronted the gravest economic disaster since the Great Depression if lawmakers failed to act.

"We have acted boldly to help prevent the crisis on Wall Street from becoming a crisis in communities across our country," Bush said shortly after the plan cleared Congress, although he conceded, "our economy continues to face serious challenges."...

I shared with close friends a couple of weeks ago that these congress people were just voting "no" so they could turn around and vote "yes" to this bail-out plan. Their mantra will be, "Well, I voted against it before I voted for it!"

The true test of congress' metal will be whether or not they prosecute the leaders of these failed companies as the ENRON executives. That will be the true test of their intentions to protect and serve the American public.

I honestly don't expect them to do so as to many of them are in bed with these executives, the top ones actually serving now in the democratic leadership of the election!...can we say 'cover-up' is going to be in the works...this is what they are really worried about.

There is going some sweating in DC.
