Next Consideration from the "Puritan Catechism"

Question 2: What rule has God given to direct us how we may glorify him?

Answer: The Word of God which is contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments is the only rule to direct us how we may glorify God and enjoy him.

Only the Word of God you say? By that same Word we read in John 5:38-40, "...And you do not have his message in your hearts, because you do not believe me--the one he sent to you. 39 You search the Scriptures because you believe they give you eternal life. But the Scriptures point to me! 40 Yet you refuse to come to me so that I can give you this eternal life."
NLT

The Word without the Spirit residing in the heart is oh so empty. Pride, arrogance, and finally empty 'religion' are the result thereof. We hear or read the Word but less the Spirit opens our hearts to believe the Word we are left with confusion and human tradition.

Gal 3:1-3, "You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? 2 This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? 3 Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?"
NASU

The Spirit it takes to open the human heart to the truth of the Word. One may hear, read, memorize, immerse ones self in the Word, but hungry hearted one, without the Spirit working in the heart...mizery will the result be!

You will say, "I need to do more! I need to learn more! I need to pray more!"...more, more, more...and all the while you gain less, less, less...until finally empty you are.

Again the "Puritan Catechism" starts with us trying to learn what we must do to enjoy God...wrong focus indeed. Start with the wrong focus and the target you want to hit will not in your sights be...and neither will you end up where you want to go!
